This is the first time that indigenous musicians have written for and performed their own music on their own instruments and written music for a classical ensemble. Music composed by Mexika.

MEXIKA was formed by Martin Espino and Christopher Garcia. Espino and Garcia first crossed paths in 2005 when they shared the stage for the first time at a world music festival in Los Angeles, California. Martin had been researching, cultivating and performing his love for the indigenous music of Mexico while Christopher had been doing the same with the music of North and South India performing concerts throughout the world. After many conversations about music and the musicians they had independently worked with and finding common cultural and musical ground, they joined forces in 2005 to become MEXIKA.

Their love of research combined with a desire to learn as much as possible about indigenous music, has taken them to many universities and stages as both performers and lecturers. In order to continue to educate themselves and perpetuate the ART of indigenous music, Espino and Garcia continue to collaborate with musicians, actors, filmmakers, spoken word artists, graphic artists, and indigenous dancers from around the world.

Mexika has performed the music of composers Carlos Chavez, Silvestre Revueltas, Joseph Julian Gonzalez in their ancient Mexican instruments with THE BAKERSFIELD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC.
