It is only appropriate to celebrate DUB MISSION’s 15th anniversary with the artist who most inspired its creation, and whose influential label is celebrating an anniversary of its own. This is Adrian Sherwood’s first appearance in the Bay Area in seven years (at Dub Mission’s 8th anniversary), and his first ever performance in the U.S. with Brother Culture.

With a career spanning over 30 years, music producer Adrian Sherwood is one of the undisputed defining forces of U.K. dub. As the founder of the massively influential On-U Sound label, he brought together Jamaican dub artists like Prince Far I, Mikey Dread, Bim Sherman, Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, and Style Scott, and British punk artists like Ari Up, to produce an impressive number of albums. Recorded under the name of studio groups like Singers & Players, African Head Charge, Creation Rebel, New Age Steppers, and Dub Syndicate, these progressive, mind-blowing albums helped bridge the gap between post punk and reggae at the time, pushing forward both genres, and influencing countless future producers, musicians, DJs, and dubheads. In 1986, Sherwood’s production work with legendary Jamaican producer and singer Lee “Scratch” Perry resulted in the classic album, Time Boom X De Devil Dead, which helped relaunch Perry’s career. Through his work with way-ahead-of-its time Tackhead (featuring hip hop label Sugar Hill’s house band: Keith LeBlanc, Doug Wimbish, and Skip McDonald) Sherwood became a massive influence on Industrial and electronic bands of the ‘80s. www.adriansherwood.com

Appearing for the first time on the Dub Mission stage along with Adrian Sherwood is one of our favorites, the massively talented and prolific MC Brother Culture. Always at the cutting edge of topics in the root scene, Brother Culture started in 1982 with Jah Revelation Muzik Sound System, and was an MC with London’s influential Dub Club in the ‘90s. He has recorded or toured with Aswad, Mungos HiFi, Zion Train, Adrian Sherwood, J*Star, Kanka, Isis, Subsonar, and Manasseh, for labels like Dubhead, Scotch Bonnet, M Records, Roots Garden, System Error, Flex Label, Dragonfly, Hammerbass, Liquid Dub, LSD, and others. Brother Culture was the principal artist on the Trojan Sound System album and has three tracks on the Aswad album, Aswad v Rydim Riders. www.myspace.com/brotherculture

Prentice Grant: From Vauxhall to Legacy — The Rise of an Independent Hip-Hop Force

The first time Prentice Grant realized music could change his life, he was just a kid in Vauxhall, New Jersey, staring at the TV. Two kids not much older than him were on the screen — backwards clothes, fearless energy, commanding the world. It was Kris Kross performing “Jump.”And in that moment, something clicked. It wasn’t just the beat.It wasn’t just the crowd. It was the power. From that day forward, Prentice didn’t just listen to hip-hop — he became it.He sharpened his pen studying legends.…See More
