Deaths in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention have surged since President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025 and launched an aggressive deportation effort. The 33 people who died in ICE custody last year represented a record high since the agency’s creation in 2003, federal records show.

To track the crisis, the Chronicle built this database of every death in ICE custody since 2025. We relied on ICE detainee death reports — congressionally mandated records of the medical care people received before they died— as well as autopsies, toxicology reports and coroner’s investigations obtained by the Chronicle through public records requests, which we’ve made available in this database. We interviewed family members of people who died and their attorneys and reviewed legal filings and medical records, where available.
