Event Description

SKIN, La Rumba & Brownswood Records Present:

“An Evening In Havana”

Daymé Arocena

DJ Cecil & Leydis

Sunday, April 3rd 2016

Singer, composer, arranger, choir director and band leader, Daymé Arocena at 22 years, is a skilful, charismatic presence in Cuban music. Her diverse musical talents are taking her quickly into broader territories. She sings the chants and song repertoires but also, absorbs music of any kind, particularly jazz and Cuban neo-soul.

The “daughter of two waters”, Yemaya (the mistress of salt waters) and Ochun (of freshwater), Daymé is a dedicated practioner of the Afro-Cuban religion, Santeria. Always clothed in white, Daymé consults Yemaya and Ochun for all decisions in her life. This way of life echoes throughout her material, as she often chants in Yoruba while fusing spanish and english lyricism.

Heavily influenced by a musical upbringing; old family records and cd’s, neighborhood rumberas, school choir and early classical training, Daymé found her voice as her primary instrument at the tender age of 4. By 16, this soulful Cuban songstress was dueting with jazz great Winton Marsalis and earning esteemed recognition from Cuba’s Minister of Culture.  At 22, Daymé is an internationally touring recording artist on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Records. In partnership with Havana Cultura, a global platform dedicated to promoting contemporary Cuban creativity and showcasing the work of artists across a spectrum of disciplines, Brownswood Recordings released Daymé’s first album, “Nueva Era” in June of 2015. Met with much fanfare and adoration, “Nueva Era” weaves between traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms and velvety jazz-funk. The Spring of 2016 marks her debut west coast tour.

Prentice Grant: From Vauxhall to Legacy — The Rise of an Independent Hip-Hop Force

The first time Prentice Grant realized music could change his life, he was just a kid in Vauxhall, New Jersey, staring at the TV. Two kids not much older than him were on the screen — backwards clothes, fearless energy, commanding the world. It was Kris Kross performing “Jump.”And in that moment, something clicked. It wasn’t just the beat.It wasn’t just the crowd. It was the power. From that day forward, Prentice didn’t just listen to hip-hop — he became it.He sharpened his pen studying legends.…See More
