Ghost production has never been a secret in electronic music (we even wrote about it back in 2016). It has always existed in the margins, understood rather than spoken about, a quiet arrangement between those who could make the music and those who had the profile to sell it. Since at least the early years of commercial EDM, bedroom producers have been crafting tracks that superstar DJs have released under their own names, pocketing flat fees in exchange for anonymity. (I personally could name quite some well-known Techno producers who moonlight as a Ghost Producer who make a tidy living)The system was imperfect, arguably dishonest, but it was at least human. The people making the music had invested years into their craft. They had something real to sell.
That has changed.
In 2026, the ghost producer has evolved into something altogether different. Artificial intelligence has collapsed the barrier between having an idea and releasing a finished record. Tools like Suno and Udio can generate production-ready tracks in minutes, complete with vocals, arrangement and mastering. What once required years of technical knowledge and thousands of hours of practice can now be approximated by anyone with a subscription and a text prompt. The ghost has left the building, and what it has left behind raises questions the music industry is only beginning to take seriously.
