Profile Information

Bio:
Roots and Branches improve exposure to cultural events in our neighborhoods by bringing art, music and food to street level. People who do not normally experience live art and music, due to either a lack of access or disengagement with commercialized versions of cultural events, find solace in Roots and Branches programming. By activating public space in Oakland, we create a safe platform for dialogue between community members. Accessible art and music provide youth with an opportunity for self-empowerment. Our portable stage hosts performances from local talent and actively engages all in a creative process.

Taking art and music out of the commercial realm ensures that young people are able to be active participants rather than monetary statistics. Giving young Oakland artists a platform to share their creativity boosts self-esteem and cultivates critical thinking. We have a strict code of ethics about what is displayed on our stage. Artists are guided to use clean lyrics and clean content to relay their messages. We operate with an “each one teach one” mentality and create an ephemeral and all-inclusive visual and performing arts space. Participants leave our events feeling proud of their community.

The Hated Crew to Release Highly Anticipated Album “DNA” June 5th

More than just another project, DNA represents the core identity of The Hated Crew—its influences, struggles, sound, and artistic vision woven together into one cohesive body of work. The title itself reflects the idea that music is embedded in the group’s very makeup. Every track explores the elements that form their musical “genetic code”: rhythm, storytelling,…See More

Cole Lumpkin Moves With the Music, Letting Life Shape Every Note

Cole Lumpkin doesn’t create from a distance. He creates from inside the moment. As a New York City native, his artistry reflects motion, curiosity, and constant self-interrogation. Music for Lumpkin isn’t something you step into once everything is figured out. It’s something you carry with you, refine on the move, and allow to grow alongside real life. A self-taught…See More
