Profile Information

Bio:
At age 13, 1 year after he began writing raps, Rich Tycoon left home for good to the streets of Oakland, CA. Not too long after, he ended up a ward of the state traveling around California living in several group homes in the cities of Ukiah, Santa Cruz, and Castroville. Later he would enter the adult system and make his rounds through some of Northern California's most notorious prisons, including San Quentin, Folsom, Vacaville, Tracy (DVI), and Solano.

By age 16, Rich Tycoon had honed his skills to the point he'd be invited to perform at local rap shows. He could also hold his own in every circle he'd freestyle in. Wherever he'd land during his travels he'd start a rap group, perform at local talent shows, and practice his writing skills. making music became his way of meeting people since he always seemed to be the new kid on the block.

His smooth flows and voice is what landed him in Sir Mix-a-Lot's recording studio as a 20-year old in 1993. Using the name Filthy Rich, at the time, Rich Tycoon connected with Sir Mix-a-Lot's hype man E-Dawg to record 2 songs; Drop Top and Lil Locs. Both songs were featured on Seattle...The Dark Side, a compilation album executively produced by Sir Mix-a-Lot and rap legend Rick Rubin.

Drop Top was the first single released off of the Dark Side album. The song and it's video aired nationwide on MTV and BET. At a time when it looked as if Filthy Rich (Rich Tycoon) was on his way, things fell apart as quickly as they came together. Two days after his 21st birthday he was shot and temporarily paralized from the waist down while involved at an physical altercation in Tacoma, WA. To make matters worse, his legal troubles caught up with him, and he was sent to prison.

It would be a while before Filthy Rich would re-emerge on the rap scene as Rich Tycoon. In 2005 he and his rap partner P.O. Tha Profit started the group Black Bizness. Over the next few years Black Bizness would independently record and release 2 albums, Shop Open and Buyin 'n Sellin'. Simultaneously the duo recorded seperate solo albums. Rich Tycoon's debut album Currency was self-released in 2008 and featured Simon Cowell's X-Factor contestant and now pop star Chris Rene along with Bay Area rap legends San Quinn, Yukmouth, and Sean T. Rich Tycoon has also also worked with Prince Lefty, Dubee (Thizz Ent.), Vital, Snow Tha Product, and D Labrie, as well as many more underground artists worldwide.

As Rich Tycoon was serving time in prison during 2009, his rap partner retired from rap music. Still, Rich Tycoon was gearing up for another go at it by writing daily and refocusing his goals. It was at this point he made the decision to re-introduce Black Bizness as a media production company, as well as continue building upon his musical legacy by recording and releasing more solo material.

Upon his release in June 2010, he began dropping singles w/ videos as he inched his way back onto the music scene. Many of his solo songs reflect his experiences in the streets, as well as in the correctional system, but his choice of words, shared experiences, and subject matter make his street story that much more believable and relatable. He knows what he's talking about and does so with savvy, purpose, and clarity. His raspy, yet soothing deep voice is one of rap music's most indentifiable, and has landed him future work recording audio books.

He also volunteers at a non-profit health care organization in Oakland, California and is very community/grass roots oriented, which he attributes to him coming up in the system.

'Being in real situations has kept me real. I thank God for that.'

Nayan Raina Turns a Late-Night Feeling Into a No. 1 Hit on Apple Music With “Phone”

There’s something quietly universal about staring at a phone screen, waiting for a message that never comes. For artist Nayan that feeling became the foundation for “Phone,” a hypnotic hip-hop duet with Yesha Sagar that has now reached No. 1 on Apple Music Video Chart.…See More
