The SF Funk Festival is keeping the funk alive with its annual "House Party" on Saturday, November 20 at Mezzanine. The night will feature several different takes on the art of funk by four very different DJs. Legendray Bay Area turntable trailblazer, DJ QBert will headline the night with an exclusive set devoted to funk, soul, disco and oldschool floorshakers. Washington DC nufunk producer All Good Funk Alliance will be on-hand to close the night with his patented funky midtempo breakbeats. SF Funk Festival founder Motion Potion will play an all-James Brown set and and Massive Selector/Sweater Funk DJ Marky drop choice vinyl. It all adds up to several different takes on the great American art of funk.

DJ QBert (b. Richard Quitevis) first emerged in the underground turntablist scene as a member of San Francisco's Invisibl Skratch Piklz. Along with other Bay Area groups like the X-Men and the World Famous Beat Junkies, the Piklz were determined to re-establish the DJs place in rap music. Looking backward into rap's past and forward into its future, Q-Bert and the Skratch Piklz championed a move away from the empty showmanship DJing had become toward the essential elements of technique and musicianship. Q-Bert in particular embarked on a mission outside the rap community, to dispel misconceptions about the DJs art through teaching and preaching the gospel of the turntable.

Q-Bert has become a sort of ambassador for the turntable. He has gained great respect both for his spectacular skills (including numerous scratch inventions) and for his work to help the turntable community. Along with Mix Master Mike, he was inducted into the DMC DJ Hall of Fame in 1998. As a group, the Invisibl Skratch Piklz made A. Magazine's 100 Most Influential Asian American's list in 1999. That same year, the group called it quits in an amicable breakup. Q-Bert kept busy, lecturing at Scratchcon 2000 and launching Wave Twisters the movie (an animated feature film based on the album). He has toured the world constantly, establishing a multi-media empire at ThudRumble, and even designed scratch mixers for Vestax. There are few people on earth who have done as much for the art of DJing as DJ Q-Bert.

Allgood Funk Alliance has been churning out newschool funk with an oldschool sound for years now. With some of the most coveted limited-release breaks records on the planet emerging from their Washington DC-based Funk Weapons label, AGFA has emerged as a leader in the struggle to make dance music relevant to folks who like the live sound. AGFA makes funk that sounds like... well... funk and after almost 5 years and a dozen releases under their belt, it's safe to say that the Funk is here to stay.
