On this date in 2023, the Hip Hop community lost one of its most innovative and influential producers when DJ Mark The 45 King passed away at the age of 62. Three years later, the Bronx-born beatmaker’s contributions to the culture remain undeniable, with a catalog that helped shape the sound of Hip Hop’s Golden Era and produced some of the most recognizable records in rap history.

Born Mark Howard James on October 16, 1961, in the Bronx, New York, The 45 King passed away on October 19, 2023, just three days after celebrating his 62nd birthday. His passing was announced by fellow legendary producer DJ Premier, who paid tribute to the man whose musical contributions helped open doors for countless artists and producers throughout the industry.

Long before producing multi-platinum records for JAY-Z and Eminem, The 45 King had already established himself as a respected figure in New York’s underground Hip Hop scene. His name came from his remarkable ability to discover obscure 45 RPM vinyl records and transform their forgotten sounds into infectious drum patterns, horn loops and unforgettable breakbeats.
