Lakeside, an American funk band, once said in their song, “Fantastic Voyage,” “come along and ride on a fantastic voyage to the land of funk.” African American Studies professor and radio host Rickey Vincent remembers this line sticking with him throughout his life.
Vincent, or “The Uhuru Maggot,” his funk character, started at the campus radio station, KALX, in 1985. He now hosts “The History of Funk” on KPFA 94.1 which airs every Friday at 10 p.m.
“I was on a mission to bring the funk to the radio station,” Vincent said. “Most college radio is billed as a freeform or at least an open access operation for students to learn media skills, radio skills, audio production and in some cases be a part of a culture or a youth culture, a counterculture or music scene through their volunteer work at the college radio. It’s actually its own subset of rock and roll life.”
