THE ROOTS PICNIC RECAP 2012 w/ RAKIM, DE LA SOUL, MOS DEF, WALE, DIPLO

http://okayplayer.com | http://twitter.com/okayplayer

First of all, let's talk about these ill capers. And by 'ill capers' I mean: The mind-blowing live performances, collaborations, DJ sets and spontaneous raves that unfolded during the 5th annual Roots Picnic on Philadephia's festival pier at Penn's Landing last weekend. And by 'talk about' I mean: Beam the sights and sounds of this ill Okayplayer TV recap directed by Emmai Alaquiva (full credits after the jump) directly into your brain. Because if we actually sat here and talked about every mind that got blown over those 2 days--the historic convergence of De La Soul, Yasiin Bey & The Roots onstage, the rain-soaked mini-freaknik that will henceforth be forever known by people that were there simply as 'Diplo-tent' (ex: "Were you at Diplo-tent? That sh*t was crazy!"), the shout-every-word percapella of Rakim x The Roots performing Paid In Full in full, and so many more--we would be talking for like 2 weeks. Luckily, you can relive it all in about 3 minutes and 41 seconds above--and stay tuned for more highlights so come!

Slimm Hill - “Big Choppa"

Slimm Hill made “Big Choppa" for a reason, and that reason was to let the world know who he is. This song’s energy is crazy, and the lyrics are catchy. Inspired by throwback hits, Slimm merged the old school with the new to compete with today’s music, but still stand out at the same time. Definitely a good trip back to the 90’s.Connect:Apple Music: …See More

RAINCOAT

Black Mike keeps coming out with hits.  His newest single "Raincoat" dropped in July, and in three short months, has surpassed 50,000 streams alone on Spotify.  The soothing melody and the passion in his voice marry well together throughout the entire song.  He is a true artist, both singing and rapping on this song.  The catchy hook "I had to make a way,  I watched you…See More

IPN - "Now It's Over"

Singer, DJ, and producer IPN just dropped a hot new single titled “Now It’s Over”. Even though the track has characteristically sad and dark sounds inspired by Linkin Park, Mike Shinoda and Blackbear, it refers to a message of hope. The lyrics aren’t really complicated, since IPN wrote it really fast and it’s not focused on a specific argument, to leave for the listener…See More
