Bio:
“Music is medicine. It can heal wounds, it can teach it can empower and liberate the mind beyond circumstance,” says edutainer Candice “Antique” Davis. She is the founder of Antique Edutainment, a music production and education company whose mission is to create music for social transformation and to leverage the power of music to provide innovative and intentional professional and personal development for educators as a vehicle for social justice and inspiration for personal transformation. Antique Edutainment consists of Antique’s music with her beatbox soul band Antique Naked Soul, her solo music and her work as a social transformation activist, professional development specialist and life coach.
Antique’s solo music was produced while she was on tour in Ghana, West Africa. It is a fusion of Afro Beat, Reggae, Dancehall and soul. She uses her sound and look to take audiences with her to different eras. “I have always had an affinity toward things ancient, things vintage and things classic especially when it comes to music and fashion,” says this Long Beach native. “I was the only kid at my school listening to Billie Holiday and the Jackson 5 on my walk-man. I always felt like I was from a different time.” Antique didn’t know she could sing until she was 13 years old. “I grew up singing but I never thought anything of it. I think my mom has me on tape singing ‘Same Ole Love” by Anita Baker when I like 7. Then one day I was singing, just playing around at school and someone said, ‘I didn’t know you could sing!’ From there I was hooked. I fell in love with singing. That day I started writing songs.” Antique wrote every song on the Antique Naked Soul album and is the sole writer on her own project as well. After she graduated from college, she sold everything and moved back to Los Angeles to attend the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, but she had to drop out due to take of funds. "It really hurt me to leave music school. I thought I would never sing again. It felt like evidence that I didn't deserve to be a singer. I didn't perform again for years. Then I got laid off from my job as a program director for a youth arts organization. A voice inside me said: Now or never. So I decided to take a chance on myself and step out on faith. I had a lot of skills and passion and I wanted to find a way to bring everything I love to do under one umbrella."
As an edutainer, Antique is also committed to education and personal development. She graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Sociology and a Master's degree in Education from San Francisco State University. She has been a high school teacher and has worked in all facets of youth development. She merges her art with her education background through her live performance workshops called "Antique's Worksuite" which she facilitates all over the country and abroad. Antique was selected as artist in residence at the University of Malta in 2013 and she is the current artist in residence for Young Gifted and Black of Oakland, a youth performance group aimed at instilling identity and pride in Black youth. Antique was also commissioned by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to write a song for their “Women in African History” curriculum.
Antique speaks of her work as a calling. "I love what I do. I get to give back, I get to share my experience to the benefit of others through music and workshops. I get to bring all of myself to my work. It has been a real journey to get here, but it was worth every single hurdle."
