After hearing the name DJ "Rasta" Cue-Tip, one might think of Reggae music! Although reggae is one of the many genres of music this deejay spins, it only represents a tenth of his deejay repertoire. Rasta Cue-Tip encompasses a variety of music styles: Hip-Hop, House, Jungle/Drum-n-Bass, Breakbeat/Electro, Latin, Reggae/Dancehall, 2-Step/Garage, Soul, Jazz and Funk. Rasta Cue-Tip attributes his music diversity to the love of the Drum. As he quotes "If it has a beat, I can mix it." A deejay since the age of 13, Rasta Cue-Tip was influenced heavily by artists such as: The Sylvers, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, KISS, Bob Marley, and Parliament/ Funkadelic in the late 70’s and early 80's. As a youth, Rasta Cue-Tip was very much into stereo equipment and was fascinated by records. The first record he owned was "ABC" by The Jackson Five. Being the youngest of three siblings and having one of his brothers a deejay, Rasta Cue-Tip found himself always trying to play his older siblings records. Growing up in this music environment encouraged his development into becoming a deejay and appreciating a wide variety of styles. Rasta Cue-Tip started deejaying at a time when many kids in the Bay Area became interested in this new trend. The year was 1983 and the beginning of the "Electro-Funk" rap movement. Exposed to the west coast style of deejaying, the up-tempo beats alongside popular dances such as "Locking", "Pop-Locking" and "Breakdancing" spurred Rasta Cue-Tip to pursue perfecting the art of mixing. Artists such as Kraftwerk, Soul Sonic Force and Egyptian Lover were the first records spun in Rasta Cue-Tip's selection. His first deejay crew was known as "Universal Sounds(U.S.D.J.)" with three other kids from his neighborhood. Predominantly playing school dances and house parties, "U.S.D.J." taught Rasta Cue-Tip how to read and interact with crowds, as well as helped his sense of timing and music selection. After graduating high school, Rasta Cue-Tip found himself at a crossroads to pursue a career in sports or continue with music. Lucky for us, he chose music! While attending CSU-Fresno, Rasta Cue-Tip became an on-air personality for their college radio station "KFSR". During his four years there, he hosted a morning jazz show, a hip-hop show, alternative-rock show and a funk/soul show. He also served one year as Station Music Director and Asst. Station Manager.
