After hearing the name DJ "Rasta" Cue-Tip, one might think of Reggae music! Although reggae is one of the many genres of music this deejay spins, it only represents a tenth of his deejay repertoire. Rasta Cue-Tip encompasses a variety of music styles: Hip-Hop, House, Jungle/Drum-n-Bass, Breakbeat/Electro, Latin, Reggae/Dancehall, 2-Step/Garage, Soul, Jazz and Funk. Rasta Cue-Tip attributes his music diversity to the love of the Drum. As he quotes "If it has a beat, I can mix it." A deejay since the age of 13, Rasta Cue-Tip was influenced heavily by artists such as: The Sylvers, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, KISS, Bob Marley, and Parliament/ Funkadelic in the late 70’s and early 80's. As a youth, Rasta Cue-Tip was very much into stereo equipment and was fascinated by records. The first record he owned was "ABC" by The Jackson Five. Being the youngest of three siblings and having one of his brothers a deejay, Rasta Cue-Tip found himself always trying to play his older siblings records. Growing up in this music environment encouraged his development into becoming a deejay and appreciating a wide variety of styles. Rasta Cue-Tip started deejaying at a time when many kids in the Bay Area became interested in this new trend. The year was 1983 and the beginning of the "Electro-Funk" rap movement. Exposed to the west coast style of deejaying, the up-tempo beats alongside popular dances such as "Locking", "Pop-Locking" and "Breakdancing" spurred Rasta Cue-Tip to pursue perfecting the art of mixing. Artists such as Kraftwerk, Soul Sonic Force and Egyptian Lover were the first records spun in Rasta Cue-Tip's selection. His first deejay crew was known as "Universal Sounds(U.S.D.J.)" with three other kids from his neighborhood. Predominantly playing school dances and house parties, "U.S.D.J." taught Rasta Cue-Tip how to read and interact with crowds, as well as helped his sense of timing and music selection. After graduating high school, Rasta Cue-Tip found himself at a crossroads to pursue a career in sports or continue with music. Lucky for us, he chose music! While attending CSU-Fresno, Rasta Cue-Tip became an on-air personality for their college radio station "KFSR". During his four years there, he hosted a morning jazz show, a hip-hop show, alternative-rock show and a funk/soul show. He also served one year as Station Music Director and Asst. Station Manager. Rasta Cue-Tip returned to the Bay Area from college and began his lengthy go around spinning at most of San Francisco's best clubs. Rasta Cue-Tip dropped tunes at hot spots such as: 1015 Folsom, Storyville, Bimbo's, Cat's Grill, DNA, Slim's, Up & Down Club, 26Mix, Jelly's, Mission Rock, 330 Ritch, End-Up, Oasis/VSF, Asia SF, Club Bas and IL Pirata. Rasta Cue-tip served as a resident and guest deejay at prominent Bay Area parties such as: "Release", "Mushroom Jazz", "Club Dread", True Skool", "Eklectic", "Uniting Souls" and the Bulletproof & Sunset boat parties. Rasta Cue-Tip also promoted two successful parties in San Francisco: "Brick"(Voted "Best Theme Night" in 1999 by The SF Weekly) and "Rotation". Rasta Cue-Tip has performed alongside world renown deejays such as: Masters at Work ("Little" Louie Vega), Invisbl Skratch Piklz (Q-Bert, Mix Master Mike, Apollo, Shortkut, DJ Disk, DJ Flare and D-styles), Beat Junkies (Babu, Rhettmatic, J-Rocc and Melo-D), John Howard, DJ Sneak, Armand Van Heldon, Marcus Wyatt, Terrance Toy, Cut Chemist, DJ Dara, Peanut Butter Wolf, DJ Shadow, DJ Nu-Mark, Z-Trip, Mr.Dibbs, Deep Dish, DJ Craze, Julius Papp, DJ Swingsett, Rae & Christian, DJ Muggs, Ra-soul, Mark Farina, DJ Krust, Jam Master Jay and many others. He also backed up MC's such as Mos Def, Rasco, Planet Asia, and Mystic. Rasta Cue-Tip has traveled the world spinning tunes across the U.S. and in Canada, Sweden, England, Austria, Jamaica and Finland. Rasta Cue-Tip was an honored recipient by the San Francisco Clubby Awards (Sf-nite.com) in the year 2000 as the Bay Area’s "Best All-Around Deejay". He has served as a staff writer to The Vinyl Exchange, The Flavor and The Gavin Report. Rasta Cue-Tip has served as the hip-hop buyer for "Amoeba Music" record store, quoted by Rolling Stone magazine as "the World's Greatest Record Store" in 1999 for the last 7 years. As well as a deejay, he is an emcee and producer in the rap group "Various Blends". "Various Blends" released an album titled "Levitude" in 2000 and sold over 15,000 units. Under the surname "Ebuhnee Frank"(EB. F), Rasta Cue-Tip has a full length solo album titled "Pure Water and Ice Cream" slated for release in 2002 on "Various Blends" own label, "Ubangi Beats". "Ebuhnee Frank"(Rasta Cue-Tip)" is also featured as an emcee on Fanatik's "Seismology" LP and No Mayo's "Funky Precedent II" compilation. Rasta Cue-Tip displays a diversity that is unmatched as he scratches, blends, juggles and drops the beats that'll make your body move and your spirits rise! WEBSITE: http://www.rastacuetip.com
