Last week, Kanye followed his appearance as musical guest on Saturday Night Live by hijacking the curtain call. West ranted on myriad half-cooked conceptions of politics, race, history, and, perhaps most notably, what it means to be bullied. A clip of that tirade existed only on Chris Rock’s Instagram story until self-destructing at the 24-hour mark. Swizz Beatz was quick to come after him.
This week’s episode of SNL not only featured a cognition-clearing performance from Travis Scott, but was largely devoted to the erasure of West’s imprint on the late-night show. During the consistently cerated Weekend Update segment, Pete Davidson, who’s been entirely transparent in dealing with his own bouts of mental illness, recounted the off-air, pro-Trump, post-show tirade with a play-by-play, noting his swift exit from the stage as West went deeper into a painfully misinformed stupor.
Davidson explained that West wore the MAGA throughout the week of rehearsals, debunking the claim of persecution for his beliefs. He was also sure to note that “being mentally ill is not an excuse to act like a jackass,” and that if what we saw last Saturday was West sans medication, he should probably just take them. Davidson capped the segment by unveiling his own redesign of the MAGA hat.
