Over the years, The Roots‘ personal style has become nearly as ubiquitous as their music. In particular, Questlove’s signature Afro and Black Thought’s beard.
So it caught viewers by surprise when during an interview about the upcoming AMC series Songs That Shook America on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon uncovered some rarely-seen photos of a fresh-faced Questlove and Black Thought from high school.
Before the reveal, Questlove explained the process behind Songs‘ choice of anthems, as well as the creation of his Mixtape Potluck Cookbook collaboration with Martha Stewart. Quest went on to reveal that, in addition to being one of the greatest rappers ever, Black Thought was one of the best chefs ever. “I feel like this whole food space I’m in is more like impostor syndrome,” he said. Thought went as far as to say he may enjoy cooking more than rapping. “It’s a different medium, it’s more therapeutic.”
