Although De La Soul is in an ongoing battle with Tommy Boy about their early catalog possibly being available on music downloading and streaming services, the rap trio is still celebrating their legacy and the 30-year anniversary of their debut album 3 Feet High and Rising.
The group served as the headliners for StubHub’s SXSW show on Wednesday (March 13th). The show also featured Phony Ppl, Leikeli47, and Open Mike Eagle. During their performance, De La’s Trugoy took a moment to address the crowd and make the case for the rap trio being “the greatest group ever.”
“I recently heard some people talking about being the greatest group ever and I think there’s some amazing groups out there but the idea is being a group. I think right now we’re probably the only group in hip-hop that stayed together,” Trugoy said before continuing:
“There are many out there that claims they’re th greatest groups even as recent as the Migos, I believe, said something. And that’s cool because they’ve accomplished so much those, guys are doing amazing things. But you could only say that when you’ve been here 31 years, OK? I’m sorry to say, that today we claim being the greatest group ever because we stuck together and we’re a group first.”
