"Several Crates" of Afrika Bambaataa's Record Collection Are Going on Sale

Last summer, the good folks at Boo-Hooray and Gavin Brown's Enterprise held an open archiving of Afrika Bambaataa's 40,000 deep record collection prior to its delivery to Cornell University's vast Hip Hop Collection (CHHC), the largest archive of hip-hop materials in the world, spanning over four decades and over 200,000 objects. Remember? We told you all about it. Well, the sorting and tagging is done, and next week the coolest parts of it will be on exhibit at Gavin Brown's. And, oh yeah, "several crates" of Afrika Bambaataa's incredible record collection will be made available for purchase to the public.

Boo-Hooray and Gavin Brown's Enterprise's Hip Hop Don't Stop exhibit kicks off June 26 and will run for a month, ending July 26. Some of the cool artifacts from the Cornell Hip hop Collection on display will be...

  • Hand-written lyrics by Afrika Bambaataa.
  • Original records from Bambaataa's collection.
  • Artworks and hand-painted hip-hop clothing by Buddy Esquire, the king of the flyer.
  • Original animation and photography from Charlie Ahearn's Wild Style.
  • Iconic photographs by Joe Conzo, the man who the New York Times said "took hip hop's baby pictures."
  • A sound-installation of rare live early hip-hop performances from Breakbeat Lenny Roberts' collection.

And in addition to these unique finds, "several crates" of Afrika Bambaataa's duplicate records from his personal collection will be for sale on a first-come-first-serve basis. These records are stickered as coming from Bambaataa's stash.

During the run of the exhibit, surprise guests will drop by to DJ and hang out. You can follow Boo-Hooray on Twitter and on Facebook for who and when. And it might not be a bad idea to make Facebook acquaintances with Gavin Brown's too.
