Since the mysterious death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, whose body was found on Horn Island off the coast of Mississippi on July 6, two days after he visited with friends to celebrate at a large Fourth of July party, very little has been publicly confirmed about his final hours alive.
But recently released records from his cellphone offer some clues — both about what happened that day and how some of his circle navigated the uncertainty, suspicion and intense scrutiny around his death.
Wells’ phone has been the source of contention almost from the beginning of the case. His friends kept it after the party, insisting that he left it on a boat and out of the water while choosing to stay behind at the raucous gathering, where he met a young woman.
The teen’s parents have said that behavior would have been out of character for him.
