Pete Rock may be a Hip-Hop legend, but it certainly isn’t the only realm in music he has the ability to reign supreme. The New York producer was tapped to create the remix to songstress Kali Uchis’ “After The Storm,” a standout track on her recently-released debut album Isolation. As Heads know, Pete Rock is one of the reigning remix kings, making this a big deal—especially on a Top 20 charting single (#16). If you listen to the original version of the song (embedded below), it definitely has a more Funk-based vibe, which in part, can be contributed to Bootsy Collins’ voice that intermittently inserts itself into the track.
Pete Rock’s version, while staying with the same outline of the song, adds a few more drums, but also, provides more brightness. Instead of the clouds breaking, it assumes the role of the sun taking over the sky.
The original “After The Storm” was released back in January with a video being made for it during which Tyler, The Creator is playing house in a figurative 1960s domestic Americana outfit. Directed by Nadia Lee Cohen, who has created visuals for A$AP Rocky, D.R.A.M., and Juicy J in the past, she stuck to her shtick once again – highly saturated colors and a trippy set design.
