A portion of MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland will be renamed in honor of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, who considered the city his home, the Oakland City Council unanimously decided Tuesday evening.
The portion of MacArthur Boulevard between Grand and Van Buren avenues will be renamed “Tupac Shakur Way,” according to the legislation introduced by District 3 Councilmember Carroll Fife.
Although Shakur was born in Harlem and spent his youth in Baltimore and Marin City, he credited Oakland with schooling him in the “game” and launching his musical career after he connected with Oakland rap act Digital Underground.
