Twenty-five years ago, Nas left a voicemail on DJ Premier’s answering machine that the fans got to hear. The smoky-voiced Rap phenom joined DJ Scratch, MC Eiht, and A.G., among others, on the “Aiight Chill” interlude for Gang Starr’s fourth album, Hard To Earn. A few weeks later, Nas dropped his debut LP, Illmatic, featuring several tracks produced by Preemo. It also included a vocal shout-out to the respected Hip-Hop duo of Guru and Premier.
Now, in 2019, Nas leaves a new voicemail in a clip. The short video features a hand-held shot of a wall-mounted phone. Nas, whose Mass Appeal company takes its name from a Hard To Earn single, recreates his ’94 message, except for one thing. With the Jazz music playing, this time, Nas asks, “Yo, is it true there’s a new Gang Starr album? That’s crazy, man. Let me know. Aiight, chill.”
