Seeing Lizzo headline BottleRock Napa Valley as its first Black female headliner was proof that the Wine Country festival has evolved over its 10-year run.
But not enough for 2023.
“I saw some signs that were very unfriendly towards people like me,” Lizzo told the tens of thousands of fans on Saturday, May 27, who swarmed the JaM Cellars Stage for her headlining set. “I saw signs talking about how they want to cancel people like me. Silence people like me. Choke people like me. And they right across the street. So we gonna sing this one more time so they can hear it, because maybe they haven’t heard it in a long time.”
That was how she introduced her title track from her fourth studio album “Special,” which dropped in January and topped the Billboard album charts.
