If the emergence of that horrific Kendrick x Aha twist-up has proved anything, it’s that the mash is alive and well in 2018. And in quick succession, another music-melding project has arrived to turn the work of two late legends on their respective heads.
From the mind and drum machine of D Begun, Marvin Jay manifests a union of J Dilla‘s atmospheric knock and Marvin Gaye‘s incomparable croon. The mash-up maestro works magic in uniting the pair of Detroit heavyweights, stitching together a grip of pre-What’s Going On cuts and a few late-career heaters with selections from Donuts and loosies galore from the endless stock of unreleased Dilla beat tapes swirling the web. Begun’s treatments of “You’re a Wonderful One,” “Ain’t That Peculiar,” and “If This World Were Mine” are particularly potent blends.
