The 14th Annual A3C Festival has been taking place since Wednesday in Atlanta, Georgia. As usual, this premiere Hip-Hop gathering had an amazing line-up of the genre’s best and brightest performing. Names like Wu-Tang Clan, The Diplomats, Talib Kweli, Lil Wayne, Mannie Fresh, and PRhyme have been headlining the event over the last three days. In the midst of Royce the 5’9” and DJ Premier’s PRhyme set the celebrated DJ/producer broke out a little treat for the crowd, which included Ambrosia For Heads.
From behind a high-walled DJ booth Preemo announces, “Y’all should know this one,” and then proceeds to cut up a jazzy record. He follows up with, “Sorry y’all can’t see me back here with this f*cking thing in the front of us. Who the f*ck built this sh*t? That ain’t Hip-Hop! Shout to A3C though. Much love.” He continues to scratch the wax and when he finally let’s the song drop, it’s clear it’s the sample he used for The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Ten Crack Commandments,” one of the jewels off his diamond-certified double-album, Life After Death.
The record Preem is spinning is Les McCann’s “Vallarta” from his 1977 album Music Lets Me Be, and he gives the audience an ample portion of the track before tearing up the mellow keyboard. The Gang Starr O.G. even dances along with the cutting.
Once the sound is identified, P-P-P-Premier starts lacing it exactly as he did for Biggie’s drug dealing anthem. He cuts in Chuck D’s countdown, and then Christopher Wallace’s vocal kicks in. This display proves once again that the “DJ” in DJ Premier is not just for show.
