When Boots Riley was 8 years old, he missed the bus on his way to school.
The Oakland filmmaker, rapper and activist grew up across the street from San Antonio Park, and every morning, he had to catch two buses down the hill to Kaiser Elementary School. But that day, he lost his transfer.
At first, Riley wasn’t too concerned. He figured he’d explain the situation to the bus driver and be on his way. But the driver refused to let him on.
