Moments ago, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib released their sophomore album, Bandana. It is the Oxnard, California-to-Gary, Indiana pair’s first album in five years, following Pinata. Reportedly the second in a trilogy (with Montana reportedly coming next), Bandana arrives on Keep Cool/RCA Records.
Following three preliminary songs and a music video, Heads can now bask in some of the exciting collaborations on the album. This includes “Education,” featuring Black Thought and Yasiin Bey. A recent interview with Entertainment Weekly‘s Alex Suskind reported that Madlib has produced more than eight songs with Black Star, making this moment all the more exciting. The MC formerly known as Mos Def kicks things off with a hard verse about taking justice into his own his hands. The beat breaks, before Black Thought enters with a filter on the microphone, continuing the message of fighting back against the systems of oppression designed to hold groups in place. After another intermission, Freddie Gibbs busts through with a Gangsta Rap verse about answering to nobody. Like Yasiin and Thought, the speaker realizes that his destiny may be short, but he is willing to risk it all for what he believes in.
