Event Description

San Francisco's longest-running spoken word variety show features the amazing Josh Kornbluth as a guest MC, plus an all-star line-up!

When: Saturday, August 9, from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM, doors open 6:30 PM
Who: Sarah Ladipo Manyika, Anne Leonard, Madison Young, Myriam Gurba and guest MC Josh Kornbluth!
How much: $5 to $10, all proceeds benefit the Center for Sex and Culture

About the readers/performers:

Guest MC Josh Kornbluth is a prolific monologuist and performer, whose monologues include Love and Taxes, The Mathematics of Change, Ben Franklin Unplugged, Citizen Josh, Andy Warhol: Good for the Jews?, and Sea of Reeds. He hosted the Josh Kornbluth Show on KQED. He's also made three movies: Haiku Tunnel, Red Diaper Baby, and Strange Culture, plus an appearance in Teknolust.

Sarah Ladipo Manyika was raised in Nigeria and has lived in Kenya, France, and England. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and currently teaches literature at San Francisco State University. Her writing includes essays, academic papers, reviews and short stories. Sarah's first novel, In Dependence, is published by Legend Press (London) and Cassava Republic Press (Abuja).

Myriam Gurba's books are Dahlia Season (Manic D), Wish You Were Me (Future Tense), menudo & Herb (self-published), and A White Girl Named Shaquanda (self-published). She blogs at Lesbrain.Wordpress.com and RADAR Productions.

Madison Young's serves as the Artistic Director of the forward thinking non-profit arts organization, Femina Potens Art Gallery. Young's writings have been published in The Ultimate Guide to Kink, Baby Remember My Name, Rope, Bondage, and Power, Best Sex Writing of 2013, and Johns. Marks, Tricks, and Chickenhawks as well as her recent memoir, "Daddy: A Memoir". She serves as the Director of Programming at the DIY maker space Hacker Moms in Berkeley.

Anne Leonard has been writing fantasy and other fiction since she was fourteen and finally, after a career with as many detours as Odysseus, published her first novel, Moth and Spark, in February. She has a lot of letters after her name that are useful when trying to impress someone. She has worked in libraries, academia, and the legal field, and before becoming a full-time writer was a practicing attorney.

Writers With Drinks has won numerous "Best ofs" from local newspapers, and has been mentioned in 7x7, Spin Magazine and one of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City novels. The spoken word "variety show" mixes genres to raise money for local causes. The award-winning show includes poetry, stand-up comedy, science fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, literary fiction, erotica, memoir, zines and blogs in a freewheeling format.
