DETAILS On Friday, April 2nd, True Skool, whose mission statement reads, "dedicated to preserving the legacy of hip hop", presents a new event that pays tribute to Hip Hop's Golden Era. Aptly titled, "Golden Era", this event brings back the hip hop classics from a long forgotten era of hip hop that represents diverse voices counter to the mainstream hip hop heard and seen in today's radio and TV stations. The event features luminaries such as DJ Apollo (Triple Threat DJs), Sake One (PST/Local 1200), D-Sharp (Quannum), Jah Yzer (Jah Warrior Shelter), Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist (True Skool), Whooligan (40Love), Proof (Massive Selector) and Vickity Slick (YBR). "We're bringing it back to when there was a balance in hip hop music," says Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist, DJ and event organizer. "From True Skool's inception, we've incorporated classic hip hop and supported independent acts who keep the hip hop spirit alive. For almost 10-years, our website (http://www.trueskool.com) has served as a platform for those under-represented voices and now it's grown as a social network like a Facebook for the urban music scene." From artists like NWA and Public Enemy to Queen Latifah and KRS-One, "Golden Era" will set the stage for a series of events, where the diversity of this era (arguably between 1988-1994) can be represented and where a diverse group music lovers young and old can appreciate hip hop music when it was all about "Peace, Unity, Love,& Havin' Fun".

Prentice Grant: From Vauxhall to Legacy — The Rise of an Independent Hip-Hop Force

The first time Prentice Grant realized music could change his life, he was just a kid in Vauxhall, New Jersey, staring at the TV. Two kids not much older than him were on the screen — backwards clothes, fearless energy, commanding the world. It was Kris Kross performing “Jump.”And in that moment, something clicked. It wasn’t just the beat.It wasn’t just the crowd. It was the power. From that day forward, Prentice didn’t just listen to hip-hop — he became it.He sharpened his pen studying legends.…See More
