The story...

Crown City Rockers is a genre-blending collective whose music is all together original, powerful and provocative.

Crown City Rockers formed in Beantown’s Roxbury section and later relocated to Oakland, CA. Reaching astonishing achievement with their three full-length releases, Mission: One, Earthtones, and The Day Afyer Forever they have recorded music that seamlessly fuses all of the group’s sonic facets. Crown City Rockers has toured the globe extensively, and fostered a passionate fan base throughout the west coast and beyond. Being proclaimed “Best Hip Hop Group in the Bay” by both the San Francisco Weekly and San Francisco Guardian is a testament to their loyal local roots. The Guardian testifies that a Crown City Rockers show “infuses a highly musical sensibility into basic b-boyisms. The six piece outfit throws down for the cause with an admirably honest effort that shows, more than anything else, their dedication to the art form…anyone who’s caught one of their live shows al ready knows the fevered intensity the group can bring.”

Crown City Rockers front man Raashan Ahmad is readying his second and latest solo project, For What You’ve Lost on Bay Area indie imprint A Champion Sound. The 13 track collection is a musical voyage decidedly introspective with Raashan’s emotional-laden lyrics over Jazz, soul and funk-drenched grooves and sharp live instrumentation. Guest appearances include vocalists Aloe Blacc and Noelle Scaggs along with hip-hop veterans Gift of Gab, Count Bass D, Chicago’s Capital D, Rita J, and Stro the 89th key of The Procussions.

His emotions and love for the music is so evident, from mcing, to producing, b-boying to photography and video directing, he is truly a one stop shop. Raashan has traveled the world and back this year promoting his new album including performing at the Gilles Peterson World Wide Awards Show in London, several tours through France, Austria, Japan as well as Australia. On the road he’s experienced the highs; being interviewed on a national news channel in France broadcasting to over 20 million people and the lows; landing in Tokyo just before the latest earthquake hit. If you’ve had the pleasure to know Raa, you will understand that his life is his music.

Prentice Grant: From Vauxhall to Legacy — The Rise of an Independent Hip-Hop Force

The first time Prentice Grant realized music could change his life, he was just a kid in Vauxhall, New Jersey, staring at the TV. Two kids not much older than him were on the screen — backwards clothes, fearless energy, commanding the world. It was Kris Kross performing “Jump.”And in that moment, something clicked. It wasn’t just the beat.It wasn’t just the crowd. It was the power. From that day forward, Prentice didn’t just listen to hip-hop — he became it.He sharpened his pen studying legends.…See More
