Beat Market, a new quarterly series at Mighty, features rare internationally acclaimed musical performers/acts in conjunction with décor, art, fashion, and street food vendors to create an artistic-savvy, non-pretentious atmosphere whereby patrons can be exposed to more than just a club night out. This second installment of Beat Market hosts Belgium’s and arguably one of the world’s most renowned and respected production duo of Jean Vanesse and Thomas Sohet aka Spirit Catcher.

SC bring their fierce and bombastic live performance to the Mighty stage as production wizard Jean Vanesse incorporates their own works dotted with layers of effects and samples alongside Thomas Sohet’s keyboarding genius. Using old analogue gear with modern technology to “futurize” their works, SC’s polished “future disco sound” explores the spectrum of groove-based deep, synth, disco, funk, and house flavor. This tandem act spends most of their time in the studio year-round in Brussels. However when on tour during their dynamic live performances SC greatly involves the crowd in their creative process of production, soaking up new influences and testing unreleased tracks to gauge crowd response as a means to improve their already stellar sound. 100% improvising at each show, no single SC Live experience is the same. While their distinctive SC sound constantly evolves, it always remains a mixture of uplifting, driving beats, deeper darkness, and fresh hypnotic sounds.

Citing influences by the black American funk of Herbie Hancock, George Duke, D’train Zapp, Chic as well as eighties boogie and even Detroit techno legends Juan Atkins and Derrick May, their works are not only coveted by a-list DJs and producers but also by bedroom DJs and fans who just love to let go and dance. Their most recent nu-disco EP release “Secret Stranger” topped the charts on Beatport and once again proved why they have become one of the most in-demand house acts around with support and play from the likes of Kraak&Smack, Sasha, Motorcitysoul, Pezzner, Japanese Popstars, Doc Martin, Carl Cox, Rulers of the Deep and many more. Together they are, along with the likes of fellow producers such as Tiefschwarz, Trentemoller, and Dirt Crew, one of the most exciting producers on the European mainland - with a string of of outstanding tracks released on Moodmusic, Missive, Freerange, 2020 Vision, and NRK.

Special DJ and promotional support will come from eug (Face/Public Release), local artist collective Pink Mammoth, and Al Velilla from OM Records. Making vibrations with fresh beats in his home base of San Francisco to international gems like Paris and Tokyo, Eug has been making a name for himself ever since he touched turntables in '92. Currently holding monthly parties around San Francisco with his label Public Release with guest DJs such as Jacques Renault and Peanut Butter Wolf, Eug exemplifies how diversity and attention to aesthetic can lead the road to original success. Pink Mammoth’s signature deep, funky, style will close out the evening and Velilla will open the night with his disco-infused beats.

9-10:30 Al Veilla (Om Records)
10:30-12 eug (Face/Public Release)
12-1:30 Spirit Catcher Live
1:30-Close Gravity & Jonathan W (Pink Mammoth)

Beginning at 7pm local designers will be vending their clothing and jewelry lines, a special wine tasting conducted by SF’s Cellargal sommelier, and SF street food vendors will be on site for your taste buds’ pleasure.

Prentice Grant: From Vauxhall to Legacy — The Rise of an Independent Hip-Hop Force

The first time Prentice Grant realized music could change his life, he was just a kid in Vauxhall, New Jersey, staring at the TV. Two kids not much older than him were on the screen — backwards clothes, fearless energy, commanding the world. It was Kris Kross performing “Jump.”And in that moment, something clicked. It wasn’t just the beat.It wasn’t just the crowd. It was the power. From that day forward, Prentice didn’t just listen to hip-hop — he became it.He sharpened his pen studying legends.…See More
