SF Weekly Brings You the Night the Stars Shine in San Francisco
SF MUSIC AWARDS
featuring Bay Area hip hop legend and musical maverick LYRICS BORN playing a complete set!
plus THE HEAVENLY STATES
hosted by Bucky Sinister

WHEN: Thursday, October 16, 8pm
WHERE: RUBY SKYE 420 Mason St | San Francisco
TICKETS: http://inticketing.com/evinfo.php?eventid=28403
DETAILS: Come on out to recognize the best in local music for 2008. SF Weekly has spent the year watching closely and writing hundreds of articles
about the local scene. And even though one would think this has earned them the right to choose award winners, SF Weekly still gave that power to YOU
the music fans. Ballots are active and you can vote now for your favorite artists in categories like HIP HOP, ROCK, ELECTRONIC, EXPERIMENTAL,
COUNTRY/FOLK etc. YOU CHOOSE IT folks, the best of the Bay as decided by YOU. And on Thursday the 16th you get to come out and congratulate your choices in person. Watch as the best of 2008 feel the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat.

But that doesn't even sound like that much fun, which is why SF Weekly went the extra mile to bring you a TRUE BAY AREA HERO. None other than one of the musicians who has managed to buck every trend, stick to his guns and produce
the most vibrant, hard-hitting hip hop in the Bay Area. Lyics Born has shouted out for peace and righteousness when others MC's were going
gangster, he has EXPANDED to a full funk band when others were stripping down to minimal beats, and he has consistently featured his wife (Joyo
Velarde) on equal footing in a genre that practically screams misogyny. Tom "Lyrics Born" Shimura is a hip hop hero if there ever was one, and with his
cohorts at Quannum, DJ Shadow, Blackalicious, and Lateef, have managed to create a label capable of finding and promoting the musical heroes of the
future. On Thursday, Tom will be honored for his contribution to Bay Area music, and then will play a complete set of his original, hard-hitting
funk-driven hip hop.

The Hated Crew to Release Highly Anticipated Album “DNA” June 5th

More than just another project, DNA represents the core identity of The Hated Crew—its influences, struggles, sound, and artistic vision woven together into one cohesive body of work. Cole Lumpkin Moves With the Music, Letting Life Shape Every Note

Cole Lumpkin doesn’t create from a distance. He creates from inside the moment. As a New York City native, his artistry reflects motion, curiosity, and constant self-interrogation. Music for Lumpkin isn’t something you step into once everything is figured out. It’s something you carry with you, refine on the move, and allow to grow alongside real life. A self-taught…See More

Prentice Grant: From Vauxhall to Legacy — The Rise of an Independent Hip-Hop Force

The first time Prentice Grant realized music could change his life, he was just a kid in Vauxhall, New Jersey, staring at the TV. Two kids not much older than him were on the screen — backwards clothes, fearless energy, commanding the world. It was Kris Kross performing “Jump.”And in that moment, something clicked. It wasn’t just the beat.It wasn’t just the crowd. It was the power. From that day forward, Prentice didn’t just listen to hip-hop — he became it.He sharpened his pen studying legends.…See More
