On this day in 1991, Trenton’s own Poor Righteous Teachers, Wise Intelligent, Culture Freedom, and DJ Father Shaheed, dropped their sophomore album Pure Poverty on Profile Records, following up their acclaimed debut Holy Intellect.

Largely produced by New Jersey beatsmith Toney Dofat (better known as Tony D), the 13-track project didn’t break into the mainstream the way their first album did. By the early ’90s, major labels were shifting marketing dollars away from conscious Hip Hop and pushing “gangsta rap” acts instead. That same year, DJ Quik’s Quik Is the Name went gold in just four months on the very same label, while groups like PRT received less of a push.

Still, Pure Poverty delivered powerful records that resonated with fans of substance and style. Standouts included “Shakiyla,” a heartfelt dedication to Black women; “The Nation’s Anthem,” their own spin on the 5% Nation’s anthem; and the head-nodding, knowledge-laced “Methods of Dropin’ Mental.” The album carried on PRT’s tradition of sharp lyricism and teachings rooted in the Nation of Gods and Earths, cementing their place in Hip Hop’s conscious movement.
