Founded 27 years ago by Phillip and Keith Frazier and trumpeter Kermit Ruffins while attending Joseph S. Cark. Sr. High School in the historic Treme district of New Orleans, the group continues to keep and play the rich traditions of jazz music to music fans all over the world. The group was created out of a necessity of modernizing and giving a “rebirth” from those traditional New Orleans bands like The Eureka, The Olympia, The Tuxedo, and The Majestic brass bands that played locally and really never took it elsewhere. With the exception to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Rebirth Brass Band incorporates jazz, hip-hop, soul, gospel, and other contemporary forms of modern music. Each member of the group brings a a whole different vibe to unit, which give the band it’s own funky and creative identity.
The group’s music is currently getting a lot of positive press and is heard in the HBO hit series “Treme” produced and created by David Simon (The Wire). The show is shot in New Orleans in Treme, a working class African-American section in which depicts life after the 2005 Hurricane Katrina catastrophe. Both Phil and Keith composed and contributed music that best represented and captured the essence of the city and people of the New Orleans.
The Rebirth Brass Band’s current members include: Phil Frazier (Tuba), Keith Frazier (Bass Drum), Derrick Tabb (Snare Drum), Derrick Shezbie (Trumpet), Glen Andrews (Trumpet), Stafford Agee (Trombone), Corey Henry (Trombone), Vincent Broussard (Saxophone), and Byron Bernard (saxophone).
