Yes my people!!!
March is looking to be a great month. I am moving, got booked for a new party, added a new partner to Sibin Mondays, a Reggae Legend is coming to town, some friends are throwing a benefit concert with a line up that showcases the best of the Virgin Islands/local talent and who knows what else will happen.
No more living in Oakland for ya boy. It is back to SF and a FastPass in my wallet at all times. Bye, bye Piedmont, the Ave, Cato's, Geo Kaye's, Arts Crab Shack and hello Excelsior Disctrict (I will keep you posted on the new places that you are gonna wanna check). I am moving in with some good folks and excited to live with music people again, especialy a DJ that is years ahead of me. I just might learn something new.. It is a little sad to leave the the neighborhood and the dopest roommate ever. Maximum respect to Alison who has been my Reggae Rider in times of need and not, but also a true friend that I will miss making midnight runs to the 7/11 for tall cans of Mucho Mango Tea. She is so special, Movado wrote a song about her!!!
We are so happy to announce that we have brought on DJ Nikka T of Joseph Starr Sound to Sibin @ Otis, our weekly Reggae Party in the City. He is one you better watch out for, a rising star on the Reggae scene that has a passion for the music that is inspiring and stays on top of the latest riddims that will rival any DJ in the Bay. Nikka works with True Skool, has two weekly parties (Rise Up and now Sibin), a monthly party called Lover's Rock @ Ettiqutte on Market & 7th in the City and works for a Radio Station in Marin, so let's just say that his game is strong. It is an honor that he has decided to help us run Monday nights and take Sibin to the the next level.
Here are some upcoming events that you will not want to miss...
March 13th - Rankin Joe @ Friday Night Jamboree inside El Rincon, SF CA
When mentioning the pioneering DJ's of the 70's, usually the names U-Roy, Prince Jazzbo, King Stitt, Dennis Alcapone Dodd and a name change to produced by Clement with Bunny Diamond, "SHINE EYE GIRL" and "This recording lead to more producers becoming interessted in My work and as a result I performed more records for different producers such as Bunny Lee,to name a few." The records are of such Joe worked alongside Robinson and had hit records such as, and others are herald most. Ranking Joe is another of these artist that deserves the recognition of their talents and contribution to reggae music over the years. He made a rare appearance in Long Beach, California, with singer Michael Palmer last November, and these two tore down the house with hit after hit.
So, Who Is Ranking Joe? Born Joseph Jackson, in Kingston, Jamaica , July 1, 1959, he was introduced in the music business at Tarrant Junior Secondary School in Kingston. Joe performed at school concerts and won local talent contest in the mid-70's. As he got older, he participated in stage shows and parties in different Jamaican parishes for vereran singer/promoter Jackie Brown. His first performing name was "D.J. Jolly", and performed with well know artist like Horace Andy, Dennis Brown, Bingy Bunny, Bongo Herman , and Keith Poppin. At age 15, he went to the legendary "Studio One" to auditionand what resulted was his first big hit "GUN COURT","Coxsone""Little Joe"."OLD TRADITION" done by Bunny Lee, "HONDA 750" done by Pete Weston. "PSALM 54" and "JACKET" with Watty Burnett, "STOP YOUR COMMING AND COME", done by Sly and Robbie and "NATTY BMW""NATTY NEVER GET WEARY" done on Sonia Pottinger's famous "HIGH NOTE" label. As he grew older, still into a young man, he changed his name on the advice of Prince Tony Robinson to "Rankin'Joe"."A YOU Mr. FINNIGAN",with an album of the same name. He was then was then introduced to the King of DJ's "U-Roy", after which he worked on his "KING STUR-GAV HI-FI", the most popular sound system in Jamaica at that time. "I later developed my original style of fast rapping. , toungue twisting and that became the most popular thing to hit the airways. The style was (Bang-dilly), also used , aslso used by "Heavy D", an American Rapper". Joe's string of successes kept rolling. "With an introduction to "Joe Gibbs", of whom I did records(singles)"LEAVE FE ME Girl Arlene" and "Bald Head Bridge" done by the group "CULTURE" and Myself." The latter was released as a disco 12" 45 record-one of the wicked extended mixes of the "rockers" period of the late 70's. "In 1977, I was voted the most popular DJ of that year, for my records that were on the charts and my performance of "KING STUR-GAV" sound system. In 1978-79 I was approached by "Henry 'Junjo" laws for the "Volcano Label", the top producer during that time. I recorded an album titled "Saturday Night Jamdown Style" , which was released by Greensleeves in France and VP Records in New York and as a result were successful". Joe also remembers , "In 1980, I was offered a deal to tour London for the first time with original soundsystem ray Symbolis alongsie promoter Errol Dunkley and Jah Screw the Selector and that lead to the tour of England. March 15th - Rise Up w/ Nikka T of Joseph Starr Sound @ SF Underground, SF CA
Nikka T has taken over the runnings of the Sunday night Reggae party at the SF Underground and has booked the Jah Planet Sound System. Those of you have not been to this party need to come and check the technique. They got a system that is all the way proper, a super chill back area for all you smokers and some of the best bartenders in the city, not to mention it is in the Lower Haight right down the road from Ali Baba's Cave (my favorite Middle Eastern spot ever... try the falafel sandwich, it is outa control). Be sure to check out the line up for the next two months, he has booked some heavy hitters. This is one weekly party not to be missed.
March 20th - A Benefit for Phil Merchant
Phil Merchant is one of the best Reggae Bassist of our time. He is a cornerstone of the DAPP Band, and is known to many as the Bass player for the MIDNITE Band when they busted onto the Cali scene.
Phil was recently in the wrong place at the wrong time, and was hit by bullets not intended for him. After emergency surgeries he is in a more stable condition, but still needs recovery treatment. We (secure Dem Sound) are holding this event to help raise money for Phil's needs. He is a good humble, music loving family man.
Please come out and do your part in helping one our soldiers who currently needs our Love and Support. Plus it'll be a great night !!!
