Bio:
Soul Luciani brings to house music a passion that is both deeply infused in the music, and at the same time, transcends it. He recognizes that a good sound is the foundation of a good party, and that a carefully crafted mix that elicits and magnifies the dancers’ emotions in a carefully choreographed sequence will build that party to a crescendo, creating an unforgettable experience that people will want to return to again and again. At the same time, Soul sees house music as a crucial thread in the tapestry of life. It is, to him, a way of life – a philosophy that uplifts, breaks barriers, draws strength from diversity and teaches its listeners that we are all drawn together by the common rhythms of life.
True to that insight, Soul is more than just a DJ, and his parties are always about more than just music and dance. Through his music, Soul seeks to build communities. His parties offer platforms for a broad spectrum of artistic expression – from poets and story tellers to painters and photographers – and also build upon a sense of family, by offering come-as-you-are tea dances, barbeques and other amenities specifically designed to enhance the comfort level of all who attend. Yet, Soul never loses sight of the central importance of music in drawing together all the divergent threads of his tapestry; he invests countless hours searching record stores for the music that will define the experience of his guests.
Born and raised in Boston, Soul Luciani first became interested in house music at the legendary Loft, were he and hundreds of others would dance until six in the morning every weekend. It was here that he first saw the powerful ability of music to bond a room of individuals into a powerful wave, moving together in harmony and belonging to something bigger than themselves. By 1995, he started doing opening sets for DJ Bruno at the loft and Francis Eglehardt at the Paradise, and soon after that, Soul and Paul Nickerson began hosting their own parties, called Spiritual Unifications. During this time, Soul also connected with some of New York’s top DJs, such as Joe Claussell and Kerry Chandler.
The next step in the evolution was Life, a party jointly produced by Soul, Paul and Francis, which featured guest appearances by many of the region’s top talents – names such as Francous Kevorkian, Loui Vega, Joe Claussell, King Britt, Osunlade, and many other well respected DJ's. Life was wildly successful, drawing huge crowds and voted best underground house party on the east coast.
In the late 90's, Soul became fascinated with traveling, and moved to Miami, where he held a weekly residency at Zanizibar and had the opportunity to play at several Winter Music Conference events. Soul next moved to Los Angeles, where he did private ranch parties, then returned to New York to help his old friends Paul Nickerson and Francis Englehardt with their newest project, the opening of Club Love. Once that club was successfully launched, Soul resumed his travels, playing in Denmark, Switzerland and Ireland before settling in Spain for a year.
Soul’s travels across the U.S. and around the globe both confirmed his innate belief in the universality of music – house music in particular – and broadened his appreciation for the endless cultural diversity that can and must contribute to the emotional experience of that music. Soul has now settled in Oakland, California, a city rich in diversity that in many respects mirrors Soul’s own life experience. It is here that he has chosen to launch his next venture, This Must Be The Place, drawing upon both his global travels and his inner journey to bring to The Bay a musical and cultural experience unlike any seen here before.
