Tupac and Afeni Shakur are the focus of a new docuseries from FX. Dear Mama takes a look at the relationship between the famous rap star and his political activist mother; a relationship that shaped both of their respective legacies. The series is directed by Allen Hughes, who helmed the acclaimed HBO documentary The Defiant Ones, which examined the careers of Beats co-founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine.
Dear Mama is a five-part documentary series “told through the eyes of the people who knew them best,” according to FX. “An intimate wide-angle portrait of the most inspiring and dangerous mother-son duo in American history, whose unified message of freedom, equality, persecution and justice are more relevant today than ever.”
In the 47-second video there is audio of Afeni Shakur explaining what she felt were important lessons she instilled in her son, encouraging him to stay be knowledgeable about what's happening in the world and stand firm on his opinions.
“It was my responsibility to teach Tupac how to survive his reality,” she says in the clip. “So, Tupac do something wrong? Take his little sorry self in that corner, get The New York Times and let’s have a debate about it… Not a discussion; adebate. Let me hear what your idea is… Stand up, defend it.”
