After years of snubs (despite Questlove‘s tireless advocacy,) Janet Jackson has finally been inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Last night at a ceremony held in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, the youngest Jackson was welcomed into a prestigious roster of musicians by Janelle Monáe, who warmed up the crowd with a proclamation of her debt to Jackson, crowning her the “queen of black girl magic.” Monae described the first time she saw Jackson on TV: “This resplendent, assertive, talented girl with an afro puff on the top of her head. And it was just so refreshing to see someone who looked like me and millions of other little black girls around the world.”
Taking the stage to accept her honors, Jackson thanked her family and trusted creative team (specifically, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.) She capped the heartfelt bid of gratitude with a plea to the institution: “And Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, please, 2020: induct more women.” Jackson was amongst a revered class of honorees, including Stevie Nicks, Radiohead, Roxy Music, The Zombies, Def Leppard, and The Cure.
