Eva DuVernay's new Netflix limited series When They See Us debuts this month—but it's been years in the making. After receiving a tweet from a member of the Central Park Five, a group of 14- to 16-year-old boys—now men—who were wrongfully convicted of the violent rape of a jogger in New York City, DuVernay took the time to get to know each of them: Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Jr., and Korey Wise.
The men ultimately spent between six and 13 years in prison. Another man confessed to rape and their convictions were vacated. The five sued New York City for malicious prosecution and other charges, and though the city refused to settle for years, in 2014, the city settled the case for $41 million.
The new "four-part film," as DuVernay describes to it, tells their story from beginning to end, starting with who they were as teenagers, before their first contact with the police.
