SALINAS (KRON) — Police officers and sheriff’s deputies from as far away as Soledad and Santa Cruz are on alert after reports of violent protests in Salinas in the wake of a viral video showing an officer shooting a man armed with garden shears.
The unrest follows a day of protests Wednesday from community members angry about the shooting.
The video shows members of the crowd shouting at officers after the shooting.
The officers had responded to reports from a resident of Elkington Avenue at 12:14 p.m. Tuesday that a man was trying to break into their home and was threatening to kill them, police said.
The person who called 911 reportedly told officers a man armed with scissors had gone inside the home, tried to kill his dog, and exposed himself while making sexually explicit comments.
Officers say they confronted the man and tried to get him to drop the shears. They say they deployed their taser but it was ineffective. That’s when the officers opened fire striking the man and killing him.
Witnesses can then be heard screaming in outrage at the officers.
This is the second fatal officer-involved shooting in Salinas in May and the third this year.
