The O’Jays are hanging it up. Capping 50 years, 30 studio albums, and countless unforgettable cuts, the Ohio-bred hit squad has announced their final album, The Last Word, will arrive at the top of 2019.
Today, they’ve released the first single from the album, “Above The Law,” along with the track’s politically-edged video, featuring clips of Colin Kaepernick, the Black Lives Matter protests, the swearing in of Brett Kavanaugh as the the country’s next Supreme Court justice, as well as Harvey Weinstein and the slew of sexual criminals that sparked #MeToo. The song was written by the legendary, Betty Wright, who noted the track “describes the habits and habitat of true menaces to society,” in a statement.
The current O’Jays line-up features Walter Williams Sr., Eric Nolan Grant, and Eddie Levert Sr. (who joined Erykah Badu in a Soul Cypher at her Soul Train Awards hosting debut in 2015.) The Last Word is slated for a February 22nd, 2019 release via S-Curve. They’ll be on the road next month, hitting Oakland and Atlantic City before the year’s up.
