George Zimmerman’s estranged wife said she now doubts his innocence the night he killed Trayvon Martin. In her first interview since a domestic violence incident at her home, Shellie Zimmerman said she thinks “anyone would doubt that innocence” that her husband shot Martin in self-defense.

In her interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer, she repeated what she told the 911 operator that Zimmerman punched his father-in-law and appeared to threaten them with a gun. “I really don’t know what he’s capable of,” she said. “This person that I’m married to, that I’m divorcing, I’ve kind of realized now that I don’t know him and I really don’t know what he’s capable of. I saw a look in his eyes that I’ve never seen before that day.”

MATT LAUER: Through all of this, with all you are now going through — and I mean with the divorce and this altercation, has it changed your perspective at all on what he’s told you happened the night that Trayvon Martin was shot and killed? Do you still believe the story that we have all heard from him?

SHELLIE ZIMMERMAN: I’m conflicted on that. I believe the evidence, but this revelation in my life has really helped me to take the blinders off and start to see things differently.

LAUER: I want to make sure I understand. So you now doubt his innocence, at least the fact that he was acting in self-defense on the night that Trayvon Martin was killed?

SHELLIE: I think anyone would doubt that innocence because I don’t know the person that I’ve been married to.

LAUER: That’s a dramatic change. I mean, you didn’t seem to doubt his innocence during the entire trial. You stood right there by his side. You went into hiding with him. You faced death threats with him. You lied under oath for him. And now you’re saying you have doubts?

SHELLIE: I have doubts.

Despite her new doubts, Shellie maintained that Zimmerman never racially profiled Martin.

Asked why she never pressed charges after the domestic violence incident, which occurred the same week Shellie filed for divorce, Shellie said she felt intimated to work with police due to her own probation for perjury. “In hindsight I should have and I really regret that, but I’m on probation, and the officers made it very clear that day that if I pressed charges we were all going to go to jail and I would have been the only one to stay there.” Zimmerman told a different story of what happened, claiming he didn’t have a gun.

Others have reconsidered Zimmerman’s innocence since he was acquitted of killing Martin. After the trial, one of the six jurors that decided Zimmerman’s fate said that he “got away with murder,” while maintaining that Florida law made it clear they were not able to convict him. Local Police Chief Steve Bracknell has expressed his own concerns, agreeing in an email exchange with a concerned citizen that Zimmerman as a “ticking time bomb” and a “Sandy Hook” waiting to happen.
