RZA: "THERE'S A VERSION OF 'C.R.E.A.M.' WHERE ME AND GHOSTFACE ARE RHYMIN'"

The Abbott of The Wu-Tang Clan, The RZA sat down with Jalen Rose on his Renaissance Man podcast recently and discussed working with Quintin Tarantino, forming The Wu-Tang Clan and his new album with DJ Scratch, Saturday Afternoon King Fu Theater. When speaking on the Clan the RZA said: “We weren’t accepted in a lot of places. There was a time when we were banned from almost every club in New York. Perseverance and people like Poppa Wu who saw us ready to go to war, and he told us to come in peace and be prepared for war. When we started coming with that energy it got better for us.”

When Rose asks how RZA decides who goes where on a Wu Tang song, RZA replies: “It was two ways of doing it. First, sonically knowing my M.C.’s and who had the bass, who had the treble and who had the aggression. Secondly, on some of the songs, I would demo them first. There’s a version of 'C.R.E.A.M.' where me and Ghostface is rhyming. It didn’t work. Trial and error and not being able to say ‘I gotta cut you off’. The order of 'Protect Your Neck' was changed from the original order ‘cus sonically, it just didn’t flow.”

RZA says of the new album with DJ Scratch; “On this new project I’m the MC and Scratch is the producer. I’m lettin’ him just….he’s one of the best DJ’s ever, he’s magic on the turntables and he’s one of the best Hip Hop producers as well. You just have to have the confidence to let the producer do his thing, and pass me the mic and I’ll do my thing.”
