Questlove, whose universally acclaimed directorial debut Summer of Soul won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature earlier this year, is set to executive produce a new film on the life of the late J Dilla.
The Hollywood Reporter first revealed news of the project, which is based on Dan Charnas’ book Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm. Two One Five Entertainment—a media company founded by Questlove and Black Thought—is partnering with Charnas, Joseph Patel, Cinetic Media, and Scenario Media for the estate-approved documentary.
A press release adds that the upcoming documentary, co-directed by Patel (Summer of Soul) and Darby Wheeler (Hip-Hop Evolution), is designed to serve as both biography and “musicology” while detailing the sustaining and undeniable influence of the late producer.
