We told you that ?uestlove‘s super-jam at Bonnaroo was gonna be nuttin’ to funk with. But even we didn’t know it would be the occasion for El Patron to speak these words:

“I’ve been waiting 12 years to say this — ladies and gentlemen, D’Angelo!”

The prodigal Okayplayer joined a super-jam line-up including members of the Time, Parliament-Funkadelic and, of course, The Roots for a 90-minute set that included covers of classics by Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles (watch above), Sly Stone and Funkadelic among others. There were no D’Angelo compositions played (unless you count a hint of “Chicken Grease” during the super-jam rendition of “Mother’s Son” by Curtis Mayfield) but besides the fact that the Bonnaroo appearance represented D’Angelo’s first stateside appearance in 12+ years (a full month sooner than expected) the quorum of D’Angelo, ?uesto and James Poyser made it the first reunion of the surviving core of The Soulquarians in more than a decade as well (Dilla, R.I.P.).
