"We just wanted to make a project we would be fans of," says chazNasty, about "YIKES!" the collaborative mixtape between True Poetic artists, Keme Davis and chazNasty. Keme Davis, the lyricist on "YIKES!" explains, "I came to chaz with the idea of doing a project based on the music we grew up on. We became who we are musically because of what we were influenced by growing up, its sort of a tribute to those artists." The tape begins with Keme venting his frustrations with his day job to chaz's voicemail before bursting into a Masta Ace sample. "Yeah that's a real Voicemail," recalls chaz laughing. "We're comfortable with ourselves so we can be honest about who we are," adds Keme. "It's rare to hear rap lyrics a regular person can relate to nowadays. Most people can't relate to rapper problems, though I have those too, I talk more about my problems as a human,"
Anyone who grew up in the 90's will find YIKES nostalgically familiar. "I flipped a lot of samples from my favorite artists growing up and put my personally twist on them," says chaz who held down the production of "YIKES!" In the first track alone we hear , Masta Ace's, Jimi Hendrix, NWA, and some classic drum breaks. Chaz explains his choice to use samples by adding, "I still don't believe sampling has the credit it deserves as an artform. Creating something new from something old is how ideas evolve. I wanted to show how it can be done artistically, it's not just stealing."
