New documentary on the female pioneers of electronic music to premiere in November

A new documentary focused on electronic music’s female pioneers will premiere in November. The film, Sisters with Transistors, will investigate the role of women in the early days of the genre, shedding light on how trailblazers contributed to “inventing the devices, techniques and tropes that would define the shape of sound for years to come.” The forthcoming project follows the TIFF-premiered Underplayed, which brings forth issues of gender, ethnicity, and sexuality faced by women in the dance music industry.

Featuring key players from around the world including Suzanne Ciani, Delia Derbyshire, Laurie Spiegel, and Clara Rockmore, the upcoming documentary observes the societal motivations and impact of women creating electronic music as “a unique emancipation struggle, restoring the central role of women in the history of music and society at large.”

“We women were especially drawn to electronic music when the possibility of a woman composing was in itself controversial. Electronics let us make music that could be heard by others without having to be taken seriously by the male dominated Establishment,” states Spiegel.
