The Recording Industry Association of America held its RIAA Honors: Pioneers of Hip-Hop awards ceremony last night (9/14) in the nation's capital. MC Lyte, Grandmaster Flash, Jeff Harleston of Universal Music Group and chairman Hakeem Jeffries were honored as leaders who have impacted American music, culture and society. DJ Jazzy Jeff and Mix Master Mike of Beastie Boys spun a set consisting of Grandmaster Flash songs and breakbeats made popular by Flash.
Rapsody performed a rendition of Lyte's 1991 hit, "Poor Georgie" and legendary West Coast MC Yo-Yo introduced MC Lyte and declared her "A three-time RIAA certified gold award winner, who the public knew was special since her 1988 debut Lyte As A Rock."
Super Producer Dr. Dre delivered Grandmaster Flash's introduction via a video where he labeled Flash "The first DJ to make the turntable an instrument, and an innovator, scientist, and mastermind."
