DJ Premier has had one of his busiest years in recent memory. The Gang Starr member released and produced albums by MC Eiht and Torii Wolf. He just followed those efforts with a video collaboration with A$AP Ferg, helping relaunch ’90s Hip-Hop source Payday Records.
Preemo is the latest guest on the Rap Radar Podcast. In a conversation that nears two hours, the producer tells Elliott Wilson and Brian “B.Dot” Miller about some historic events. Premier recalls a heated exchange with Chuck D at a Long Island grocery store over an allegedly called-off lawsuit regarding Biggie’s “10 Crack Commandments”(52:00). He also describes the two living legends patching things up at Jam Master Jay’s wake some years after.
Minutes later in the convo, the producer of Jeru The Damaja’s “One Day” discusses being the producer of Biggie’s reply-diss, “Kick In The Door.” In doing so, the producer was asked to leave his D&D Studios enclave and work at Puffy’s Daddy’s House Studios. Preemo also recalls having Cypress Hill, RZA, GZA, Blahzay Blahzay and others at those legendary “frat-style” parties at Gang Starr residences in the ’90s. Never short on details, Preemo gives Elliott and B.Dot some vivid imagery into his wild days, and is also willing to address the estranged years with Guru in the 2000s.
