After the shooting at Reynolds High School in Oregon this week, CNN reported that 74 school shootings have happened since the Newtown tragedy in 2012. Now, the network has changed its mind — really, only 15 school shootings have happened since Newtown.

What happened to those other 59 shootings? While they were indeed incidents where someone fired a gun in or around a school, they involved "personal arguments, accidents [or] alleged gang activities and drug deals." So, you know, stuff that was going to happen anyway.

As Nicole Flatlow at ThinkProgress notes, not "counting" school shootings involving gang violence is a favorite tack of gun rights activists and conservatives. In fact, CNN changed its figure after conservatives complained about those 59 "fake" shootings on Twitter and Hot Air.

As Charles C. Johnson, a Daily Caller contributor, notes above, the original 74 number came from Everytown for Gun Safety. That's former Mayor Michael Bloomberg's umbrella group that advocates for gun control. But Bloomberg's agenda doesn't negate the fact that those 59 other school shootings happened, and are, in fact, real.

Here's CNN's official take on the matter now: "CNN determined that 15 of the incidents Everytown included were situations similar to the violence in Newtown or Oregon — a minor or adult actively shooting inside or near a school." The other 59 shootings killed 25 people and injured 45.
