Radio has gotten a lot less local in the last 30 years, as institutions have folded and corporations have swallowed up stations and imposed less regional playlists. Remarkably, over those many decades, one Bay Area disc jockey has weathered the industry’s numerous changes to keep connecting with generations in this community in meaningful ways.
Chuy Gomez, now 55 years old, is on the air five days a week in the drive time slot at 102 JAMS (KRBQ-FM), playing throwbacks from artists like Tupac, E-40, Snoop Dogg and Missy Elliott. He is also a host on the long-running California Music Channel, a job he’s held for the past 32 years. CMC was founded in 1981, the same year as MTV, and still serves as a free music video channel available through antenna TV. Gomez has a video show weeknights on CMC, and on Sunday nights, he hosts “Cruisin’ With Chuy,” playing legends like Stevie Wonder and Mary Wells and taking vinyl requests from the 1960s and 1970s.
